Got in a couple of hours after work this afternoon. Cracked on with attacking the capping, but it's really hard work and very slow progress getting through it, even with a pickaxe. Still haven't reached the ash yet, but the hole is slowly extending.
The thickness of the capping can clearly be seen here:
